Lost Literary Foundation

It is late afternoon on the Kloveniersburgwal, the “Town Moat” that marks the eastern border of medieval Amsterdam. The sunlit buildings on the east side of the moat are reflected in the windows of this building on the west side. At the same time, the windows on the east side throw sunlight onto the western boats, car, and foundation stones. Number 86 is the home of Perdu, a literary foundation that runs a poetry bookshop and sponsors a reading series called “Fresh from the Knife.” Whoever wrote on the chalkboard to the left of the entrance has renamed the place Medisch Centrum Perdu, “Perdu Medical Center,” in recognition of a special event scheduled for this coming Friday. A medical ethicist and a feminist columnist, taking Susan Sontag’s Illness as Metaphor as their point of departure, will share the stage with Oliver Oat and his Magnificent Moving Orchestra. Like other Perdu events, this one will be recorded and made available as a “Lost Podcast.”
